Senario - OK, say the U.S Government legalized prostitution for taxation purposes. LOL Yeah, right.

Question 1 - Would some strip clubs become brothels?

Question 2 - Would LD prices increase dramatically?

Q 1 - Some stripclubs are already brothels.

Q 2 - Brothel like services ITC cost quite a bit more that LD's.

Q1 - Yes, of course.

Q2 - Not necessarily. If by lapdance you literally mean just a grind and rub (no hj, bj, daty, fs), there are reasons the price could go down.

First, transaction costs would be less. Right now clubs have to spend time, effort and money making sure they don't get in trouble with the law. If everything was legal anyway, they could avoid these costs. So there would be a cost savings for everyone, because money wouldn't be spent on stupid shit (like monitoring the dances).

Second, supply could well go up. If it's legal and hassle free to run a strip club and offer LDs, more people will enter the market, which will drive down prices.

Third, more customers might also enter the market (guys who until now don't go into SCs). But most guys who now don't go into SCs (but really want to) are holding back because of social stigma, not because of concerns about LE. After all, people don't get prosecuted just for lapdances per say (they get prosecuted, if at all, for "extras"). So I don't think there would be an increased demand for lapdances per se. Instead, there will probably be a decreased demand for them, because a lot of guys who are now just getting "regular" lapdances will instead want to get laid. If that's correct, and the demand for plain old lap dances goes down, you'd see the price drop dramatically. In fact, it is possible that a regular lapdance would be free, and would merely become a marketing tool to get you to buy sex.

Would the price of sex go up or down? Hard to say. On the one hand, a lot of the transaction costs would go away, and the supply would be higher. On the other hand, if guys no longer had any fears of being arrested, the demand might be higher too. My guess is that if left to market forces, the price would ulitmately go down, because I think most guys avoid prostitution for reasons having little to do with whether it's legal or not. There might be a burst of increased demand, but I don't think it would last.

Part of the problem, is that you would never get to find out what would happen if market forces were allowed to operate naturally. For one thing, if legalized it would be heavily taxed, like smoking. Second, it would not be nationwide. Prostitution is regulated at the state level, so some places would make it legal, and some would not. For the places where it is legal, you would have an artificial increase in demand, as guys from neighboring states would cross state lines to go to "legal" brothels.

But if prostitution became legal, I think paid lapdances themselves would almost become a thing of the past -- why would someone pay for a lapdance if they could get sex instead?

1. Yes. Obv.

2. Regular LD prices would probably fall, due to decreased demand. Also if prostitution were legal customers could legitimately complain, or even sue for fraud, if a girl promised one thing but did not deliver. Also customers/girls would feel more comfortable spelling out explicitly what was expected. Some customers might prefer that, but I actually find the ambiguity fun. (One of the reasons I prefer strippers to escorts.)

"But if prostitution became legal, I think paid lapdances themselves would almost become a thing of the past -- why would someone pay for a lapdance if they could get sex instead?"

In Nevada, around where the MLBR is, there is actually a strip club surrounded by three or four brothels. And it's just dances.

Also around here, many of the strip clubs, or at least at certain times of the day were defacto brothels. Yet some girls doing just lap dances continued to survive.

Some guys are very scared of STDs for one thing. Another factor, I think, is that many seem to think that they can develop a relationship with a stripper and she do more over time. (These guys are complete fools, IMO.) Some other guys are even stranger and just don't want more than lap dances. I think it's because they think it would have some detrimental impact on their "personal relationship" with the girls. (Get a fucking real girlfriend for that I say: whores exist precisely to be fucked!)

Some people find this hard to believe but there are plenty of guys who DO NOT WANT TO FUCK A stripper, or a whore, or an escort. They do enjoy the "mild stimulation" of a lap dance, and the mild thrill of YMMV, and the beauty of the naked and near-naked body - especially when it is extremely close to their own body.

That said, I would definitely predict that the price of regular lap dances would decline if prostitution were legal in the same establishment or nearby. Supply and demand would push the price down -- whether a little or a lot is the question, and on that I have no opinion. Well, probably either a little or a lot.

A writer at asstr.org did a per capita comparison of Holland and the U.S. Holland has legal prostitution, but regulates and taxes it. If the U.S. followed suit, property taxes could drop by 80 perecent.

If the US did follow suit, yes, prices would go up, but so would the quality of escorts/strippers.

Although I am happy and not looking for anything outside my marriage, I'd have to say that legalization would be awesome. It'd be win win from the tax revenue standpoint, from the disease control standpoint and most importantly from the wife and I obtaining the golden "no strings" threesome!

I would be in favor of making it all legal. Right now for conservative folks, you have to spend several thousands of dollars and commit to a lifetime with the same girl to get sex. The guy may end up without if his girl doesn't feel like it. Make it legal and then you can spend a hundred or two, have sex, and move on to the next girl as if you're getting another lap dance. Making it legal could require having people checked for STD's and make it safer than it is now since it all happens in the underground economy now.

BJ's could even become free and become a widely used tactic by girls in clubs to entice a guy to spend more time with her. It could be a free appetizer. All the small talk and do you want a dance etc. etc. could become a thing of the past. Well one problem might happen. I can imagine a guy complaining "this ugly girl came up to me and just pulled it out and started sucking away! I couldn't get her to stop. How do you keep ugly girls away from your dick?" Maybe we should be careful what you wish for.

legalized prostitution?...maybe in a few states, but for the other 45-48 states, we would all have a better chance of winning the lottery.

If I win the lottery I'm taking that $$$$ to Nevada anyway. Problem solved.

There would be some changes but not every dancer is looking to be a prostitute and not every customer is looking for sex.

In Providence, where indoor prostitution is not illegal, there are rampant extras in almost every club but "clean" dancers still do very well.
